Writing Across the Curriculum

Teachers can use writing in a couple of different ways in their classrooms:

Writing to Learn AND Writing to Assess


Writing to learn... What is that?

Writing isn't just about essays and research papers in English class.
Writing is a good way for students to process new ideas, connect ideas, and express their level of understanding. Writing activities can be used in any classroom as a way for students to master material at a deeper level.

Writing to Assess... What is that?

Short simple writing tasks can also be used as formative assessments.
Having students write their own definition or examples of a concept from class on an idex card before they leave class is a great way to measure student understanding of material presented in class that day.

Longer, more formal writing assignments are often used as summative assessments.
A student created report about the effects of their household water usage for a whole week will show their level of mastery of the concepts and content presented in an entire unit about water.
